CT Scanning Honeycomb Composites

CT Scanning honeycomb Composites

Corrugated, high-temperature honeycomb cores are used in industries where lightweight, thermally stable, and conformable sandwich structures are required. These lightweight materials are designed to form complex curves without damaging the core or breaking bond lines.

Industrial CT imaging is used for failure investigations and R&D to evaluate process changes like assessing core wall wet-out, revealing non-uniform resin coverage along the honeycomb cell walls.

Under-wet considerations include: facesheet/ core debond, shear failure, early fatigue cracking

Over-wet considerations include: brittleness, local stiffness mismatch, thermal stress concentration

This CT slice view shows a range of ~1mm to ~7mm epoxy thickness, with the thicker zone being concentrated toward the center of the test piece.

This view shows a planar, interlaminar indication consistent with delamination extending across more than three inches of the composite.
